Runway shows are more than the accessories and garments that walk the runway—designers put meaning behind each look. But Matthieu Blazy proved that runway looks are open to interpretation at Chanel’s Spring/Summer 2027 show.
For the creative director’s latest Chanel collection, Blazy played birdsong at the venue, illuminated feathered creatures behind the models, and even brought the avian theme into hair. While a French twist or updo isn’t uncommon at a Paris Fashion Week show, Chanel reimagined the classic style.
At first glance, I jumped to the conclusion that the models’ perfectly coiffed buns were inspired by a croissant (the show was in Paris, after all). But after considering Blazy’s other bird motifs, it seems Blazy and the hairstylists created bird’s-nest-inspired buns. “Bird’s nest hair” typically conjures messy hair, but Blazy gave the term a new meaning by leaning into a nest’s round shape with a Chanel twist. The hair look was so elegant and neat that the bird reference was easy to overlook. To lean into the theme, Blazy also had some models with feather earrings and feathered hairpins strategically placed throughout the bun.
The nails on the runway also had a dainty, spring feel. Manicurist Ama Quashie created gold-framed nails in marbled designs, pastel blues, and deep reds, with a Chanel logo detail that we’re adding to our nail mood board for the upcoming spring season.
We saw a major resurgence of the French twist at last year’s Spring/Summer 2026 collections, like the comb-adorned twists at The Row, and the hair trend continues to reign. “When there’s a hairstyle that has one foot in the past and one foot in the future, people respond well to it,” hairstylist Guido Palau told Bazaar. “There’s something nostalgic, but it feels feminine, sculptural, and modern all at the same time—and something people could try at home.”
