From the Academy Museum Gala to the LACMA Art+Film Gala to the Baby2Baby Gala, there is no shortage of annual black-tie fundraising events and star-studded balls in Los Angeles. So when a new one pops up with a crowd that includes everyone from artists to athletes to actors to philanthropists, you know it’s a good one.
Last night, Airbnb hosted its first-ever gala, welcoming the likes of Zoe Saldaña, Serena Williams, and Matthew McConaughey to Milk Studios to celebrate a new funding model for its nonprofit sector, Airbnb.org. Founded in 2020, the sub-section was formed to provide free temporary housing to those in crisis, supporting people impacted by natural disasters, families traveling for medical care, individuals fleeing domestic violence, and more.
From yesterday onwards, the company known for its short-term rentals and unique global experiences is donating a portion of its revenue from every stay to its charity—with a goal of raising $500 million over the next five years, to be able to provide one million nights of free housing each year.
The Airbnb.org Gala was hosted by Jimmy Kimmel and featured a performance from Charli XCX, who wore a gold Roberto Cavalli Fall 2005 gown for the occasion. Additional guests included Chloë Grace Moretz in Louis Vuitton, Cynthia Erivo in Cong Tri, Adéla in Saint Laurent, Greta Lee in Lii, Charlize Theron in Givenchy, and Demi Lovato in Schiaparelli. Jessica Alba showed up wearing Donna Karan Fall 2003, Quenlin Blackwell went with a cutout Balmain dress, and Madelyn Cline wore floral-embroidered Wiederhoeft.
